Auld Lang Syne

from Nutmeg & Ginger by IONA

about

Auld Lang Syne (Scots) 4:36

While the song is often attributed to Rabbie Burns, he only claimed authorship of the 3rd and 4th verses. Burns, Scotland's greatest poet, was also a passionate Scottish folklorist. He collected Auld Lang Syne "from an old man's singing" and submitted it to the British Museum. We use his original tune, an old drinking song, ending with a chorus of the more modern and better known melody. Elke's fiddles echo Rabbie's version as we bid our listeners Auld Lang Syne.

lyrics

Auld Lang Syne
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And auld lang syne!
For auld lang syne, ma dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne!

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp,
And surely I’ll be mine,
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne!
For auld etc.

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou’d the gowans fine,
But we’ve wander’d monie a weary fit
Sin auld lang syne.
For auld etc.

We twa hae paidl’d in the burn
Frae morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
Sin auld lang syne.
For auld etc.

And here’s a hand, my trusty fiere,
And gie’s a hand o’thine
And we’ll tak a right guid-willie waught
For auld lang syne!
For auld etc.
